Building fakes its own perspective

We saw this building here in Miami and I had to take a picture of it. There’s a large tarp on the side of it that makes it look like it was a lot bigger than its current size. Pretty interesting way of visually expanding local architecture through optical illusions. Now if only we could do that to the US government to rescue it from its sorry state.

No Smart People Found in the US Goverment!

This site is an instant “net.art” project from the late 1990s. Enter in any text into the two boxes and click “search”. My favorites were the one above “No Smart People Found in the US Government” , and this one of “No sober people found in Ireland“. Thanks to Lucy for the link!

Blog turns 5

Today is the 5th anniversary of this blog. I started it in July 2003 just to try and document projects that I was interested in that were related to my own work and for my eventual thesis, and it’s been going strong ever since. Hopped a few servers and moved around a lot, but it’s nice to still be going after all these years. Thanks to everyone who has been reading! Hope to keep it more active in the year to come as lots of cool stuff to report coming up…

iDial turns iPhones retro

This iDial application for iPhone turns your iPhone into a relic from the past. I really like how it’s so old school that most people born within the last 10 to 15 years won’t even know what this thing is but the detail is nice on it and it even makes the clicking sound that those phones used to make.

Tunnel under the Atlantic Ocean spotted in Brooklyn

Today we checked out the “Telectroscope” a large, man-made tunnel that connects London, UK to Brooklyn, New York. The tunnel was built by Paul St. George and remains one of the wonders of the world. The tunnel works with an intricate assemblage of mirrors that reflect live images under the Atlantic in real-time between the two cities. Forget the Internet, this is all analog, all the time. If you don’t believe me, check out the link above.

New iPhone announced

Today, Apple introduced its latest iPhone. I actually like this model more than the last one because it really helps to make the process of getting in touch with your friends and family that much easier. Way to go Apple!

Hybrid World Scrapyard Challenge!

Katherine and I just got back from our workshop “Hybrid World Scrapyard Challenge at IMAL in Brussels. We spent 5 days there working with participants to build networked projects out of scrap and junk. Below are some pictures of projects that were built and also check out more images on Flickr - link here.

Internet controlled “City Scape” with illuminating campfires and earthquake simulation

“Reconstructed Tape Deck Mixer” - with web-based sample setting controls.

Wearable wireless image switching and sound sample triggers via web input.

“Network Controlled Cadillac Turntable Drum Machine”

“Tripod Beat Machine”

Overall some really nice projects built in the short time frame. We had a small exhibition/presentation on the last day for people to check out what was built! Thanks to IMAL and everyone who participated in the workshop!
